Taksim Square

The Turkish word “taksim” means distribution. Taksim Square was originally the point in Istanbul, where the main water line from north of Istanbul collected, and branched off to other parts of the city. Before it became a square it was a narrow area where old houses lined up. After being extended and converted into a square it gained its current appearance. The area around the Cumhuriyet Aniti (Republic Monument) which is situated in the middle of the square is where the official events such as parades or other military gatherings are held, and also this area is a meeting point for the residents of Istanbul.

This Square is where Istiklal Street which is the most famous and crowded street of Istanbul begins. Starting the day at 06.00 in the morning this street remains lively until 03.00 in the morning with its shopping centers, restaurants and bars. Walking along this 2 km long street, accompanied by the various kinds of music from the restaurants, bars and book shops, is one of the rituals of the street. Some of the places along the street that are worth seeing are; The Pera Museum, Saint Antuan Church and various art galleries. There are many cafes, bars, pubs and restaurants along the street which may appeal all tastes. The ones in Cicek Pasaji (Flower Passage), Balik Pazari (Fish Market) and Nevizade( where many restaurants and pubs, are gathered are worth special attention. Profiterol of Inci Patisserie and Turkish Coffee of Mandabatmaz Coffee House which is located in Olivio Avenue are some of the tastes which should definitely be tried. A great number of noteworthy historical buildings, churches and avenues along the Istiklal Street make walking here more pleasurable. With their new ground paving, Taksim square and Istiklal Street are completely suitable for the wheelchair users. And many restaurants and shopping centers along the Istiklal Street are also accessible for the wheelchair users.
