When you are entering the city, made itself a rightful fame in the history with its glazed earthenware, you shall see on both sides of the road the chinaware and porcelain ateliers and sales shops. Now they use modern production technologies. Some of them still produce their goods using the good old father-to-son technology. The china land Kütahya was named as Seramorium in the history. Kütahya works are on the display at most museums in the world. It is already known to us that Kütahya was fist founded in about 000 BC and that its ancient name was Kotiaeion. You should go up to the Hidirlik Hill to view the city. There are the castle walls from the Byzantines and a masjid (1246) and a rotating casino up there. While you are having a rest sitting in the casino you can enjoy the scenery all around. The numerous streets under preservation with their historical Kütahya houses shall attract your attention on the Hidirlik road. Each of these 150- 200 year old 2 or 3 storey houses have bow windows, colourful carved wooden doors and ornamented ceilings with central-designs.

The Hungarian House is an 18-century mansion. Hungary was attacked in mid 19th century jointly by the Russian and Austrian forces; the independence lover Hungarians rebel under the leadership of Lajos Kossuht. They get defeated and seek shelter from the Ottoman Empire. They are settled at the Kutahya area. The house is arranged as to maintain the memories of the independence leader Kossuht and his comrades.

The Museum of Kutahya is the former Vacidiye Medresseh built in the Germiyanogullari time in 1314. Besides the archaeological findings from the late calcolithic, pre-bronze, Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine ages, tile specimens made in İznik and Kütahya since the 14th century until today are exhibited. Sadık Atakan Private Museum exhibits the works and tiles bought and collected by its founder. In spite of the tedious mosques built one after another today, the Çinili Cami (Tiled Mosque) stands as a diverging specimen.

All the interior and exterior faces of the mosque (1973) are covered with Kutahya tiles. The first collective labour agreement was made and signed in Kutahya. The porcelain artisans on one side and the masters, experienced apprentices and the apprentices on the other side concluded a collective labour agreement in 1766 and so declared it on a pane on the main boulevard to be the first in the world. Kutahya is at the same time the birthplace of Evliya Çelebi, the famous Turkish traveller. His birthplace house and the neighbouring tomb of his grandfather are under reconstruction.


The ancient city of Aizonai, famous with its majestic Zeus Temple is about 50-km inside the main road. You need to go up till Çavdarhisar District and then turn to Emet. The ancient city is a few kilometres from Çavdarhisar. Aizonai’s history goes back till 3000 BC: All of the structures that can be seen are from l-ll century Roman age. The Zeus Temple integrated with the city is also from this age. The text of Roman Emperor Adrianus on the making of the temple engraved on the walls of this one of the best preserved structures in Turkey is remarkable. It is believed to have been devoted to Mother Goddess Kybele as well as to Zeus. The sacred site of the local Goddess Meter Steunene identified with Kybele is 2-km to the southeast of the ancient city.

The places of interest to see in Aizonai are the theatre and the stadium right next to it, the street with columns, the gymnasium, the bath and the monumental graves. Some of the items obtained from the diggings in the city are now displayed in the Museum of Kutahya.

The Hot Springs

Kutahya is famous for its hot springs too. Yoncalı, 13-km from Küthaya, is developing lately. The Ilıca Village 4-km to the field side from the junction on the way from Bozüyük to Kütahya is also famous for its thermal baths. It is just a typical thermal village with its houses and villas spread on both sides of the valley. When you proceed from Çavdarhisar to southwest you will arrive at the Simav district of Kütahya. The Eynal Thermal facilities are situated here.
