DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF TOURISM

TOURIST ARRIVALS AND TOURISM RECEIPTS

In 2002 Turkey was in 17th place in the world in terms of tourist arrivals. In 2011 Turkey moved up to 6th place.
In 2002 Turkey was in 12th place in the world in terms of tourism receipts. In 2011 Turkey reached 9th place.

In 2002 there were 13.2 million foreign visitors. In 2011 it increased by 137.3% to 31,4 million.

In 2002 tourism receipts were 11.9 billion dollars. In 2011 it increased by 93.27% to 23 billion dollars.

PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES

• In 2002 the budget for overseas promotions was 44 million Turkish Liras. In 2011 it increased 3.5 times to reach 155 million Turkish Liras.
• In 2002 Turkey participated in 100 international tourism fairs. In 2011 it participated in 153 fairs.
• In 2002 Turkey had 127 beaches, which had been awarded the Blue Flag. In 2011 it had 324 Blue Flag beaches, making it fourth in the world.
• In 2002 there were 7,685 tourist guides. In 2011 this increased to 13,214.
• In 2002 there were 4,344 licensed travel agencies. In 2011 this reached 6,366.

NUMBER OF HOTELS AND BED CAPACITY

In 2002 Turkey had a capacity of 396,148 beds in establishments with Official Operating Licenses. İn 2011, recording an increase of 71.7%, this reached a bed capacity of 680,323.

Including accommodations with Investment License, this has risen to a total bed capacity of 945,048.

In 2002 there were 419 4 and 5 star hotels with Official Operating Licenses. In 2011 this figure increased by 131.2% to 969.

In 2002 Turkey had a bed capacity of 167,633 in 4 and 5 star hotels. In 2011, recording an increase of 161.6% this rose to a bed capacity of 438,497.

SUBSIDIES FOR TOURISM INFRASTRUCTURE

In 2002 an amount of 24.5 million Turkish Liras was allocated to the provinces and the municipalities in subsidies for tourism infrastructure. In 2011 it reached 128.5 million Turkish Liras.

DEVELOPMENTS IN THE FIELD OF CULTURE

CULTURAL CENTRES

In 2002 there were 42 Cultural Centres built by the Ministry. With 42 new Cultural Centres opened since 2003, this reached 84 in 2011.
With 19 more new Cultural Centres due to open by the end of 2012, the total number of Cultural Centres will increase to 103.

ARCHAEOLOGY

In 2002 approximately 1.9 million Turkish Liras were spent on archaeological excavations and research. This amount increased 25 times to reach approximately 48.1 million Turkish Liras in 2011.

In 2002 there were 57 local (Turkish) archaeological excavations. This increased more than 2 times to 123 in 2011.

MUSEUMS AND HISTORIC SITES

In 2002 the number of visitors to museums and historic sites was 7,422,208. It increased 3.8 times and reached 28,462,893 in 2011.

In 2002 the receipts from museums and historic sites were 26 million Turkish Liras, This figure increased 9.7 times to 254 million Turkish Liras in 2011.

In 2002 there were 93 Private Museums. In 2011 this figure reached 157.

THEATRE

Since 2003, our country has seen the opening of 35 new theatre stages, making a total of 58 State Theatres in 2011. With 2 more new theatre stages due to open by the end of 2012, the total number will increase to 60.
In 2002 there were a total of 8,294 seats in State Theatres. In the 2011 -12 season it reached 20,808.

In the 2001-02 season there were 4,063 performances at State Theatres. This rose to 5,785 in the 2010-11 season.

In the 2001 -02 season, the total audience of the State Theatres was 1,014,057. This increased by 69.8 % to 1,722,294 in 2010-11.

In 2002 subsidies given to private theatres totaled 850,000 Turkish Liras. This figure increased to 3.5 million Turkish Liras in 2011.

In 2002 there were 59 subsidised private theatres. In 2011 this increased to 162.
In 2002 there were 13 subsidised private theatres outside İstanbul and Ankara. In 2011 this figure reached 61.
In this way, concrete measures have been taken to extend the arts throughout Anatolia.

OPERA AND BALLET

In 2002 there were 584 Opera and Ballet performances. In 2011 this increased to 862.

In 2002 the total audience for opera and ballet was 232,760. In 2011 this rose to 379,048.

In 2002 there were 98 national Opera and Ballet tours. This increased by more than 4,5 times to 478 tours in 2011.
The number of International tours rose from 11 to 39.

CONCERTS, RECITALS AND OTHER MUSICAL EVENTS

In 2002 1398 concerts, recitals and other musical events were organised by the Ministry. In 2011 this reached 1,970.

FILM & CINEMA

From 1990-2004 subsidies given to the film industry totaled 5,756,109 US Dollars. In the 7 year period from 2005-2011 this grew to 108,456,695.

In 2002 only 9 local films were released in Turkey. This increased approximately 8 times to 70 films in 2011.

In 2002 the total cinema audience was 23.5 million. In 2011 it reached 42.3 million, an increase of 80%.
In 2002 the audience for local (Turkish) films was 2 million. It increased to 21.2 million in 2011.

In 2005 box office receipts for local (Turkish) films were approximately 70 million Turkish Liras. In 2011 this figure reached 183 million Turkish Liras, an increase of 163.1 %.

In 2005 the total box office receipts were approximately 178 million Turkish Liras. In 2011 they increased by 124.6% to 398 million Turkish Liras.

BOOKS AND MAGAZINES

In 2002 there were 16,426 new books issued with an ISBN. This increased by 162.1 % to 43,057 in 2011.

In 2002 there were 634 periodicals issued with an ISSN. In 2011 this reached 710.

In 2002 there were 12,433,310 books in our libraries. In 2011 this increased to 15,062,529.

In 2002 there were 1,890,443 works in the National Library’s collection. In 2011 this increased by 57.8 % to 2.984.292.

In 2002 the number of users of the National Library was 297,349. In 2011 this increased by 123.4% to 664,178.
